At the Threshold of a New Era

The complex development and re-foundation of the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest

Opened in 1896, the museum building is one of the chief works of visionary architect Ödön Lechner, who created a new style in architecture. Unfortunately, the building was severely damaged during the wars of the twentieth century and this by now has resulted in critical conditions at several parts of the building.

The Museum seeks to become the most exciting museum in Central Europe by launching the “Re-touching Programme” which creates a new relationship between the visitor and the art object with the deepening of perception, technology (origin), and the legend, all with a scholarly background.

The Museum of Applied Arts (IMM) will be closed for four years, however a new Art Nouveau exhibition is scheduled to be open in another building of the museum by Spring 2018.
