Libraries

The Amatller Institute of Hispanic Art has two basic aims:
the promotion of research in the history of Spanish art and architecture
the conservation of the “casa Amatller”, and its collections (roman and modern glass, medieval paintings, etc.)
To achieve the first aim, the institute provides two basic research resources to scholars:
a library with over 25.000 titles
a photo archive & library with some 300.000 black/white negatives and the corresponding paper prints
The negative collection, started shortly after 1900, contains glass, nitrate, acetate and triacetate plates and film. The documentation of the negatives includes the year and the place they were taken.

The GRACMON, a research group attached to the History of Art Department of the University of Barcelona, deals with topics related to history of art, architecture and design in contemporary world. Founded in 1986 the GRACMON concentrates its researches on one of the richest period of history of art and architecture in Catalonia, from Modernismo to the Civil War, which offers a great field of research from a scientific point of view as well as from the point of view of research applied to preservation and promotion of cultural heritage. The GRACMON also runs the Documentation Centre of Catalan Art which is a main source of information about Modernismo for the researches of the group. This centre also contains an important series of microfilmed and scanned documents of magazines and catalogues from this period, and a fund of photographic archives.

The National museum of Slovenia is the oldest of all Slovenian museum institutions. Its six departments collect, document, preserve, and investigate the mobile cultural heritage of Slovenia and present it to the public. With the digitalization of material and the construction of an electronic database about the cultural heritage that it preserves, the National Museum of Slovenia has joined similar European institutions that are attempting to enable the broadest possible access to items of the cultural heritage through the use of modern information technology.
The National Museum of Slovenia has a rich library, which covers all the fields of the museum interest: archaeology, decorative arts, applied arts, cultural history, museology and conservation. It also publishes a series of periodicals (Argo, Situla), catalogues and monographs.

NUK is the Slovenian national library as well as Ljubljana’s University Library. The library utilizes computer data processing to support working procedures and the collections comprise legal deposited material published in Slovenia and also hold legal deposit copies from ex-Yugoslavia for the 1921-1991 period. In addition, it has an interesting collection of medieval manuscripts, incunabula, cartographic and graphic items, music, audiovisual and recent manuscript material, together with collections of periodicals and monographs in various languages. As well as performing the traditional tasks of national libraries, it also acts as a state parent library’, i.e. a centre for library network development in Slovenia.
It provides access for library users to numerous foreign information services, including bibliographic databases on CD-ROMs, which can be accessed via the ULTRANET system from the university campus.

The National Gallery is the central national institution for the study of art heritage. It has its own specialist library whose primary task is to supplement the library fund with publications that in content touch upon the art heritage of the Slovenian ethnic territory and the East Alpine cultural area. In its purchase politics it therefore touches upon such scientific areas as art history, museology, conservation and restoration and museum education.
The gallery’s fund encompasses 33,179 catalogued volumes, of which around 600 are serial publications. The library provides professional support to the core activities of the National Gallery of Slovenia. A large portion of yearly additions is made up of publication exchanges with numerous museum establishments at home and abroad.
The hemeroteque, conceived right from the start, is part of the library. It contains press clippings related to the contents and activities of the National Gallery of Slovenia, older art and architecture heritage, and cultural policies that are in one way or another connected to museum/gallery activities and preservation of art heritage.

The Architecture Museum of Ljubljana is the central Slovenian museum for architecture, physical planning, industrial and graphic design and photography. The museum collects, stores, studies and presents material from these areas of creativity at temporary and permanent exhibitions. The museum covers the entire history of these activities from the first human presence in the area of present-day Slovenia.
The department of modern Slovene architecture studies the architectural development and work of numerous 20th century Slovene architects. The department is mostly focused on various aspects of the presentation of Plecnik’s work, but it also studies other architects and their contribution to the development of Slovene architecture and has acquired the legacies of the following architects: Ivan Vurnik, Ivo Spinčič, Dušan Gabrijan, France Tomažič, Ivo Medved, Maks Srenar, Stanko Rohrman, Domicijan Serajnik, Anton Suhadolc, Jaro Cernigoj and Vinko Glanz.
The AML library is housed in Fužine Castle and is one of Slovenia`s specialised libraries. It consists of domestic and foreign monographic and periodical publications from the fields of architecture, town planning, industrial and graphic design and photography. The library and reading room at Fužine Castle is open to the general public, though a prior appointment by telephone is preferred.

The documentation center hosts over 1200 different media (books, videos and CD’s), mostly books, on Norwegian Art Nouveau and Norwegian art in general as well as on the international Art Nouveau heritage. Open every day from 8.00 to 15.30.

The “Gerd Bucerius Library” newly opened in the Schümann Wing in 2000 today comprises over 160,000 media and some 450 periodicals. Specialized literature on all the fields represented in the Museum is to be found on the more than 4,500 metres of shelf space: art and art history, both theoretical and practical, literature on European craft work from the earliest times up to modern design, as well as books on European sculpture, the art of Classical antiquity, the Ancient Orient and the Islamic world, East Asian art, architecture, fashion and textiles, the World Exhibitions, bibliographic and graphic art and photography. Auction catalogues round off the works available.
