Austria Vienna Sebastian Hackenschmidt and Wolfgang Thillmann BENTWOOD AND BEYOND: Thonet and Modern Furniture Design

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the world-famous company Thonet, the MAK invites visitors to take a journey through time and modern furniture design. The bentwood furniture developed by Michael Thonet made style history and served as the foundation of one of the world’s most successful furniture brands. At the end of the 1920s, Thonet also entered the tubular steel furniture business, which continues to be an important pillar of the company’s production to this day. A chronological overview of Thonet furniture is complemented for the first time by embedding the works in the technological, typological, aesthetic and historical development of furniture design. Complemented by loans from international collections, the book shows more than 300 exhibits, most of which were newly photographed.

International Claus Bernet Jugendstil, Secession, Art nouveau: Meisterwerke des Himmlischen Jerusalem, 7

The art of the early 1900’s was characterized by innovations and experiments. The era that includes movements such as Art Nouveau, Secession, Art Deco and Art Nouveau, has some of the most beautiful works of art produced with the design of the Heavenly Jerusalem, perhaps most notably in the field of religious art in the form of stained-glass windows, frescoes and carvings. These works are almost never in the major centers of the Art Nouveau – ie Brussels, Vienna, Prague or Paris – emerged, but aloof, often in small towns or in the countryside. Only a small number of works of art is documented or recorded scientifically, and so it was necessary to do research for this work to a much greater extent than usual for artists, history and material condition.

United-States Boston Sarah E. Thompson, Joan Wright, Philip Meredith Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai remains one of Japan’s most popular and influential artists. This handy volume presents the wide range of Hokusai’s artistic production in terms of one of his most remarkable characteristics: his intellectual ingenuity. It explores the question of how the self-styled “Man Mad about Drawing” approached his subjects—how he depicted human bodies in motion, combined figures and landscapes, represented three-dimensional objects on two-dimensional surfaces and when he used the techniques of illusionism or adjusted reality for greater visual or emotional effect. Including some 50 stunning and unusual paintings, prints and drawings from the peerless Hokusai collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, this book is a treasure trove that introduces readers to a witty, wide-ranging and inimitably ingenious Hokusai.
