La Chaux-de-Fonds, mesto z 38 000 prebivalci, leži v švicarski Visoki Juri na nadmorski višini 1000 m. Svojo sestavo, podobo, v veliki meri pa tudi značaj in celo obstoj dolguje urarski industriji. Obliko šahovnice mu je dal premišljen in idealističen, iz razsvetljenskih nazorov izhajajoč urbanistični načrt, izdelan l. 1794, potem ko je prvotna vas pogorela v naključnem požaru. Po tem načrtu so nato kraj obnovili in na novo postavili. Danes je La-Chaux-de-Fonds najpomembnejša zaključena urbana celota iz 19. st. v Švici.
Art nouveau je ob koncu 19. st. prodrl v Švico pod vplivom urarskih mojstrov in njihovih trgovskih zastopnikov. Kmalu je postal v »urarski metropoli« zelo priljubljen. Nove zgradbe so tako preplavili vitraji, tlaki iz keramičnih ploščic, stopniščno okrasje, štukature, mizarski in umetnokovaški izdelki.
Svoj izvirni izraz je art nouveau dobil v Umetnostni šoli La-Chaux-de-Fonds, ki je bila edina v Švici. Ta samosvoji in ambiciozni izraz se je začel razvijati na pobudo umetnika Charlesa L’Eplattenierja (1974–1946), privrženca art nouveauja in navdušenega pedagoga. L. 1905 je začel z organizacijo specialističnih tečajev za umetnost in dekoracijo, kjer je več svojim učencem, med njimi Charlesu-Edouardu Jeanneretu, bodočemu Le Corbusierju, zbudil veselje do preučevanja narave. Prepričani, da »navdih daje samo narava«, so mladi profesor in njegovi učenci raziskovali krajevno rastlinstvo in živalstvo in ustvarili poseben jelov slog (style sapin). Skupaj so izvedli dekoracije številnih pomembnih javnih poslopij in zasebnih hiš in vsa izpričujejo izjemno moč. Njihova ustvarjalnost je segala na najrazličnejša področja: oblikovali so ohišja ur in okrasne predmete uporabne umetnosti in se poskušali celo arhitekturi, npr., z načrtom za vilo Fallet l. 1906. Najpopolnejše njihovo delo – krematorij (1909–1910) velja za mojstrsko delo tega obdobja, ki ga označuje novatorstvo v umetniškem ustvarjanju.
La-Chaux-de-Fonds leži zemljepisno na območju, kjer so se prepletali vplivi značilno vijugastega francosko-belgijskega in veliko bolj geometričnega nemškega (Jugendstil) oz. avstrijskega (secesija) art nouveauja.
»Osnova naših ornamentalnih študij je zmeraj jelka. To drevo v svojih različnih starostnih obdobjih ponuja, gledano kot celota ali v podrobnostih, neizčrpna okrasna sredstva. Te prvine bogato dopolnjujejo veliki pegasti badelj, svišči itd. skupaj z našim jurskim živalstvom.«
